Playing Field I
November 2, 2023
Students enter a critique space through two separate doors and walk onto a makeshift dodgeball court, automatically on opposing sides. Institution-approved safety nets are hanging around the space, and rules are posted on the wall. There is a brief moment of investigation before the first ball is thrown, (the rules are not read in full). A game of dodgeball ensues.
Playing Field II
December 7, 2024
A group of students are given a collection of dodgeballs and told they are not allowed to play the game in the institution. The group discusses possible solutions of where and how to play and collectively decide on a location outdoors so as not to damage institutional property. The outdoor location is assessed, and the group decides it is too wet and cold to play. A second location is decided upon, still technically off-campus, but indoors. The students organize themselves into teams and establish the rules of the game. They place the dodgeballs in a line on the floor and a game of dodgeball ensues.
Playing Field III
February 3, 2025
At 1:49pm a group of people meet on the corner of 2nd Ave SW and 3 St SW. Two team captains are chosen, and they divide the remainder of the group evenly into two teams. One person stays stationed on the corner of the intersection with a whistle. Team members are directed to each carry a dodgeball into the middle of the intersection as soon as the pedestrian ‘WALK’ sign is lit. They are to set the dodgeballs in the middle of the intersection, take three steps back, and wait for the sound of the whistle. Once the team members are in position, the whistle blows, and a game of dodgeball commences. Twenty-six seconds pass before the whistle blows again, signaling to the two teams that the pedestrian sign is indicating it’s time to leave the intersection. The teams scatter at random before regrouping together on the corner. This process is then repeated. After regrouping a second time, the group of people then leave the location at 2:01pm.
